Understanding the process of PEACE

Axis of Hope uses hands-on negotiation role-plays to help students explore the many sides of a conflict that may be half a world away. From within the familiar walls of their schools, students are transported intellectually through high-energy, experiential education pedagogical methods to a distant culture in crisis – Israel/Palestine, South Africa and its AIDS epidemic, Rwanda, and other global hotspots. By allowing  students to participate in open, honest discussions about complicated world issues, they learn essential conflict resolution skills that will last a lifetime. In addition, students learn to see peace as an architectural process that involves discussion, negotiation, refinement and agreement. Students also learn that each carefully crafted treaty they author will be sent directly to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and to President Barack Obama.

“I enjoyed the role-play because it put ourselves in the situations. The debates got pretty heated, but the results were positive in the end.”
